Networking, networking, networking.
Everyone talks about it, is apparently doing it, and shares bits of advice, tips, and tricks. But the truth is, you won’t hack it unless you try it.
So I did exactly that. I tried it a few times. I was nervous because I had the big task of representing LMF Network, not just myself. If it were just me, it would’ve been easier. Even if I messed up, it’s on me. Not a big deal. I’d deal with it. But representing someone else? That’s scary – and anything but easy.
So I’m sharing with you, what I did, and what helped me successfully represent LMF Network at not one, but two major events.

Know who you are.
It all starts with an introduction. It’s said that it takes just seven seconds to make a first impression, and you definitely want to make a good one.
What helped me was writing down a few introduction lines: who I am, what (or who) we are, and what our goals are. Then I practiced saying it out loud, in front of a mirror or to a friend.
Breathe and remember: just like you, the person you're talking to is probably nervous and overthinking everything too.
Key tip: Do not rush when talking.
Know what the event is about.
It’s crucial to understand the central theme of the event.
Look up the agenda, the guest speakers, and who’s attending. Who knows, you might be standing in line next to a recruiting entrepreneur while waiting to enter the building. A quick chat could lead to something big, even a job opportunity.
Something as simple as, ‘How are you finding the event’ or ‘What did you think about what speaker X said?’ can be a great conversation starter.
Key tip: Prepare some questions and lines/phrases you can use ahead of time.
And now the big question…when to approach.
Networking events can feel overwhelming, and people need time to recharge their social batteries. Scan the room, look for someone else who’s wandering around, and ‘go for it.’ Smile, walk up to them, and ask one of the questions you have prepared beforehand.
People are there to build connections and meet like-minded individuals. Don’t spend all your time with just one person. Have a quick chat and move on. Remember, you won’t connect deeply with everyone – and that’s okay.
Key tip: Keep the conversation short and sweet.
What you wear is also important.
As you may know, our colours are pink and white. So, Sonya and I were wearing exactly that. Marketing at its finest. It makes people remember you and your business.

Make sure you have an online presence.
People will look you up. That’s why keeping your LinkedIn profile up to date is essential. Add your most recent roles and highlight any projects you're currently working on. A professional photo and a background image that represents your business are must-haves.
After the event, scroll through the connections you made and choose five people to message. Say hi, mention how lovely it was to meet them, and follow up on something they shared with you. It might be a project they are working on or a new role they mentioned.
Key tip: Message the people you connected with.
Practice makes perfect.
We’ve all heard it, but it’s true. It takes time to master the art of networking. Don’t be hard on yourself, be kind and enjoy the process.
